Instrument Use charges are used to recover the operating cost associated with the facility (general supplies, gases,
spare parts, etc.). For each Facility Category, this rate is generally the same for all instruments tracked. Instrument
charges are tracked via the online schedule on the NCF website. In addition, the schedules are compared to Buffone
Card swipes for each of the instrument rooms. Card Swipes not on the schedule will be added manually by the NCF Staff
in accordance to the user's typical scheduled time. This manual override causes additional administrative time by the
NCF staff. More than two occurrences per month may lead to suspended use of the facility.
The "Capped System" is a method by which instrument uses fees are calculated so as to not overburden the funding
source of a facility user while improving their skills on the NCF Instruments. There are three levels of use fees depending
on the total instrument use time in a calendar month. Instrument usage between 1-40 hours is charged at a base rate.
Instrument usage between 41 - 75 hours is charged at the base rate up the maximum capped rate. Instrument use
hours >75 are charged at 10% of the base rate. These rates are not inclusive of the FIB, prep room, XPS service, training,
staff support, nor stockroom supplies. In order to qualify for this cap rate a facility user will need to schedule their use
(>75 hours) outside of normal business hours (8:00 am - 5:00 pm). It is the responsibility of the user to monitor their
use time so that they schedule their instrument use time >75 on the 24 hour schedule.
Multiple facility members on the same project are each subject to his/her own caps. A facility member working on
multiple projects is subject to caps for each project. In summary: one cap per person, per project, per calendar month.
